Team in the Middle Program
Throughout the elementary grades, Baker’s program maintains an experiential child-centered model, while migrating to a more subject-centered approach. Teachers guide the students in the acquisition of developmentally appropriate skills and content. You may learn more about these in the teacher blogs and in the Curriculum Guide. A significant portion of the curriculum consists of integrated thematic studies, which allow for new content knowledge, skill development, and social and emotional growth. Children generally remain with the same teacher and fellow students for two years: 2nd - 3rd grades, and 4th - 5th grades. This practice, known as looping, supports the development of deep relationships and knowledge of children as learners. We believe that the better we know our students, the more effectively we can teach them. Teachers help our students know themselves as learners, identify strengths and challenges, and implement effective learning strategies as their studies progress and become more complex. The following are specials components of our Team in the Middle curriculum. Baker’s faculty are collaborative educators who integrate these areas of study with core subjects, helping children think critically, make connections across the curriculum and experience opportunities for differentiated learning.
